Genuine Ruby Earrings

Posted on | July 2, 2010 | No Comments

Since most people are aware that real ruby jewelry is not cheap many wonder where they can get the most affordable rings and ruby earrings that are genuine and yet fit into a reasonable budget. Because there are so many websites that sell lab created and enhanced or treated ruby creations for really cheap, some buyers are confused how much they should expect to pay for genuine rubies. So here are the straight facts without any sugar coating:

1. Yes, there is affordable real ruby jewelry and you can buy it online.
2. If it costs under $10 or $120 it’s probably lab created or not a real stone.
3. If you want a genuine ruby and have a budget between $150 and $300, you will probably be forced to buy a real ruby that has been treated or enhanced. This is not something secret or forbidden and no one is trying to fool you. It is an accepted practice to enhance rubies of lesser quality and sell them as genuine…which they are…just touched up with color or heat.
4. If you want something that will be investment quality, you will have to pay at least $400 to $500 for the stone itself. The setting will not be included.
5. If a ring or earring set costs just $100 or $200, the gold is what you’re paying for, the ruby is almost worthless.
6. Real ruby jewelry will be crafted from untreated and none-enhanced gems from Asian or Africa…primarily Burma, Sri Lanka, Madagascar, Thailand, Vietnam, Kenya and Tanzania….the best are Burmese and are called pigeons blood due to their deep color, the least expensive tend to come from Kenya and are not as rich in color but are considered good quality overall.

So how much should you pay? You should pay about $1,000 per carat for something good. That means that a small ruby that’s untreated should cost about $250 and the gold setting will add another $100. If you are not spending $350 or more for a pair of earrings, chances are the rubies aren’t worth much. And maybe the rubies are just simple costume jewelry pieces. The same goes for other real ruby jewelry creations, especially rings. If a gold band costs $100 and a ruby promise ring costs $110, you can easily do the math and see how much the ruby was worth.
