How to Keep Your Sterling Silver Charms Clean

Posted on | July 28, 2011 | Comments Off

If you own any sterling silver jewelry, then you are aware of how beautiful it is, and also how durable it is. After wearing sterling silver charms, sterling silver rings, etc., for long periods of time however, they sometimes begin to lose some of their original glow and luster. Knowing how to keep them clean and shining is very important so they can be worn proudly on a moment’s notice.

The easiest way to keep sterling silver charms, etc., clean is to remove lotion, oil, and dirt on it with a soft cloth after each wearing. It should always be stored inside a velvet or cloth bag in order to minimize tarnish buildup. The bag will also protect the jewelry from being scratched while it is stored.

Once every few weeks, sterling silver rings for women, sterling silver earrings and other sterling jewelry should be cleaned with a small amount of mild detergent and warm water. A gentle brushing with a clean, old toothbrush will remove built up dirt and debris. After cleaning, dry the jewelry thoroughly before placing it back into its storage bag.

If heavy tarnish has accumulated on the jewelry it can be removed with this method: In a heat-proof dish, layer crumpled aluminum foil, the sterling silver jewelry, and a heavy coating of baking soda. Pour boiling water into the dish. A chemical reaction will occur which will remove the tarnish from the jewelry. After it is cooled, remove the jewelry, rinse and dry it carefully. This method should not be done on sterling silver jewelry containing gemstones or pearls that may not be able to withstand high heat.

Your sterling silver charms and other sterling silver jewelry can be kept clean and shining with a minimal amount of care, as well as proper storage. This will ensure that all of your beautiful jewelry will be ready to wear any time you need it.
